Hello everyone!

Steve and I had taken a poll on Instagram in order to see if you all were interested in clay sculpture related videos. Producing a clay maquette is often (but not always) step one for starting any stone sculpture. The majority of people thought that this would be relevant information… so here you go!

This is a video showing the process of creating a low relief of a Northern Cardinal bird.

After producing a clay model, mold and a final cast in plaster, one could easily use it as a reference for a stone sculpture, or set up a pointing machine for exact translation into stone.

This is not a commercial plug, but you can view the final plaster casts we create here: https://www.greenpointstone.com/relief-sculpture. As you can see, every minute mark shows up in white plaster, so if that is your final material, it is helpful to use a lighter-tonality clay so you can perceive shadow contrast more clearly.

We will be creating more long-form tutorials like this for our Patreon subscribers, so if this content interests you, please look into joining our community here: https://www.patreon.com/Sculpting_Stone.

Thanks for watching!
